SEO – what it is and why should you care?

SEO is an acronym that stands for „Search Engine Optimization”. You may have heard about SEO before, given that it is an essential component for ensuring the success of your website.

What does it actually do?

As its name suggests, SEO means optimizing your website to make it easier for search engines to find. To be more specific, when someone searches for a service that you are providing, your website needs to be amongst the first results, and—implicitly—amongst the first options in your customer’s mind.

Optimization can be achieved on two levels: on-page and off-page.

On-page means following certain drafting rules, using the representative keywords for what you are offering plus a few extra things. We won’t get too bogged down in the details right now however. What you do need to know is that 35% of the quality of your website is determined by the on-page SEO.

Off-page refers to all the things you do outside your website, to lead the traffic towards it. Here, we are talking about link building, indexing and social media. You don’t need to concern yourself with this either.

Usually, a small company will have at least one SEO specialist in its team. This means an extra mouth to feed but it makes sense when your business has a certain turnover.

For small businesses, it makes more sense to mix business with pleasure. That is, to create great and valuable content for your website, that you should firstly optimize for SEO.

Remember, an awesome website not just about information on prices, services and certifications—it means bringing value to those visiting it.

Whatever your field, your website must display the quality of the services or products you are offering. One way of doing this is by presenting your visitors with valuable information.

This can be transmitted through articles, case studies or (true!) testimonials. The important thing is for the reader to feel empowered, to understand more clearly what they need and how you can help them, and for them to feel closer to your brand. That is exactly what we’re trying to do here.

And returning to SEO—your valuable, informative and interesting articles aren’t going to be read unless they are optimized. Because no-one ever searches for information on… anything on the 7th page on Google.

And if you think that you can just buy the top spot, think again—websites promoted through Google AdWords receive almost 3% of clicks, whilst organic websites get over 60% of clicks. So the safest move is the classic one—no shortcuts.
